What is The Year Earth Stood Still ?

The Year Earth Stood Still is a collaborative documentary project. Every person who has found their lives affected by the coronavirus covid-19 pandemic is invited to send us videos about their situation. We, the filmmakers behind The Year Earth Stood Still, are editing these videos into short themed documentaries as well as a full length documentary over time.

Our aim is to create a more honest, in depth view of the situation and of how it affects every one of us in different ways. So if you are reading this, you are invited to send us a video about your situation, and your life. You can find some guidance below.

2020 is seeing all our lives uprooted.

We fear for our health, the health of our loved ones, the future. Our lives have been put on hold. Businesses are going under. People are losing their jobs. Children cannot go to school. Families are struggling to make ends meet. Many of us are stuck at home.

Over it all the weight of uncertainty lingers. How long will this go on? How bad will it get? What comes after? What will the world look like, once the curfew is lifted and lives are expected to go on?

Your Story

Right now everybody is struggling. Our mission is to help all of us push  through.

We want to create a documentary, showing daily life in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis. Everybody can send their videos. We will connect the dots and edit a documentary which aims to create a bigger picture.

The story of the year when the earth stood still. The story of when every life was changed irreversibly, uprooted, unsettled. The story of your fear, your losses, your grief. The story of hope and perseverance.

Make your voice heard. Send us your story.

Send us your blogs, your footage, your pics of a day in your life right now.

Our Story

We are a team of storytellers, filmmakers, editors and we want to tell this story.

We want to document these events through the eyes of the individuals that have lived through them, not in the years to come, but now, while we are living them.

At the same time, we want to help all of us get through this. We want to share our stories to show that we are all in the same boat. We don't want anybody to think, that they are the only ones who struggles. That others are coping better. That your exhaustion and fear and frustration are less valid than those of your neighbour, your friend, your colleague. We are in this together. Let's share our experiences with each other and with the world.

Let's make it happen

What to film:

What is happening in your life since Covid-19 crashed into it? You can film yourself, as you speak to us and tell us about all the things that have changed, about your feelings, your day to day, etc. You can film things that happen around you. You can film other people as they talk to us. Anything that you feel should be told about this, film it and send it to us.

Here are some questions to guide your content. How are you feeling? How did this situation change your life? What is the biggest change in your life since the covid-19 pandemic has impacted it? What does your day to day life look like right now, as opposed to how it was before? What are your biggest fears? What are your biggest hopes? What are your biggest struggles? What do you miss most? How do you think the situation will continue? How do you think your life will be changed in the long run? How do you think the world will be changed in the long run?

Content over style

We are suggesting a few guidelines below but if you filmed something, that is interesting and important, without following the guidelines, send it anyway. Some of the most life-changing moments are not picture perfect. We want to see them anyway.

Some more tips

to tell your story better

Background noise

Avoid too much background noise. There is no use if we cannot understand what you are saying. Even if the noise is part of your message, first let us hear you talk somewhere a bit quiet, then take us to the source of the noise. Don’t let your voice be drowned out.

Don't hit the stop record button too quickly

Take a pause after you finish recording. Don’t move around, look away, ask a question. Give us two seconds of looking straight at the camera after you are done talking. This helps to make your footage good for editing.

Be yourself

Be sincere and think about what you are trying to say. Don’t turn it into a big act, just be yourself and tell us what’s really going on.

Keep it steady

Keep your camera or phone as steady as possible.  Avoid movements unless they are absolutely required to tell your story.

Language

This is an international collaborative project. English will be the main language. However if you are not comfortable, you can speak in your own language and we will translate.
